The city has had different names during the course of its history:

St. Petersburg – 1703–1914

Petrograd – 1914–1924

Leningrad – 1924–1991

The historical name of St. Petersburg was readopted on 6 September 1991.

The historical center of St. Petersburg and the groups of monuments connected with it are inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
